ÓLÖF NORDAL - MODELS

Artist Ólöf Nordal is exhibiting a new series of photographs in Ásmundarsalur. The exhibition is inspired by an old tale of a man travelling up to the mountains who encounters the dead body of a young man left behind by the glacier after a long interment in the ice. As the traveller ponders the perfectly preserved body, he slowly realises that he is looking at his own father, who disappeared in the mountains when he himself was still unborn. It is here that the father and son first meet: the son approaching seventy, the father just over twenty years of age.

Jóhanna H. Þorkelsdóttir - Luminous Flux

My ideas for an exhibition in the ASÍ Art Museum revolve around a concept called luminous flux, which is also related to behavioral psychology. I have been examining how the behaviour of life is controlled by light and darkness. There is a field within the psychology sector which studies the behaviour of people in certain spaces and theories there created are often used in shops or waiting rooms. My interests revolve mostly around light. I find it fascinating to sit in the hot tub in Vesturbæjarlaugin and watch people sitting with their eyes closed in front of the happy lights, like flowers using photosynthesis. It is both natural and human. Some sort of mix of reality and virtual reality. To directly affect the brain, melantonine levels and the nervous system the light needs to simulate sunlight as much as possible. I have created a sort of photosynthesis pool in Ásmundarsalur during the darkest winter hours and invite people to enjoy.

For Kurita, a common sensibility can be felt between two psychological states: “the mind felt when in a loophole between sleep and awakening” and “the mind felt when trees branch overhead like monsters.” Through her photographs, Kurita hopes viewers will be able to perceive some of the ambiguous and exquisite relationship between the two apparently unrelated subjects of “tree” and “sleep.” Further information on: www.swimciel.net

The Art Lovers Gallery: “The Nest of Bad Paintings” (Art in Reykjavik of the fifties)

In the 1950´s The Art Lovers Gallery was founded in the former studio of the sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson at Freyjugata 41, Reykjavik, in the building that now houses the ASÍ ART MUSEUM. The Art Lovers Gallery was the first of its kind in Reykjavik and came to play an important role in the artscene of the fifties. The gallery exhibited contemporary art with emphasis on geometric, abstract or concrete works. Not everyone embraced this “new” kind of art at that time and discussions were often hot and prolonged. Most of the artists exhibited at the gallery were young and Icelandic, but works by artists such as Picasso and Braque were also on display there, an extraordinary manifestation of the ambitions of the young directors of the gallery. The Art Lovers Gallery was active in the cultural field in many ways and also housed and promoted popular meetings where visual art, new literature and contemporary music were on the agenda. The exhibition includes paintings by some of the best-known artists of the period who were exhibited in the gallery, such as Svavar Guðnason and Þorvaldur Skúlason. Curators are Kristín Guðnadóttir, Gunnar Gunnarsson and Steinunn Helgadóttir.
